I recommend a friend for this community to come here the other day. The companionship is one of the best parts about the community. The memory care area is fantastic! The residents are friendly and talkative to each other. It allows me to help other residents out as well. The community is best suited for someone who is able to be mobile.

My mother moved into Morningside and I think it's just a good place. It's a smaller community and that allows residents to get more individualized care. I think they are short staffed but I understand that isn't necessarily their fault and it's mostly state restrictions. My mother loves the food and that's actually her favorite part!

I am so happy with the choice of community we picked. It is a smaller community, this allows the staff to give more individualized attention to the residents. They know who I am and who my loved one is when I call. The apartment for my loved one is big and bright. The community is currently going through an update of decor.

What Is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is not the same as a nursing home. Assisted living communities provide your loved one with care over a long period of time, while still allowing the individual to live somewhat independently. Services that are typically available at an assisted living community may include assistance with medication, bathing and dressing, as well as providing meals and transportation. Medical services may be available. However, an assisted living home usually does not include 24/7 medical care that can be found in a nursing home.

Assisted living communities generally have a variety of wonderful options for a resident to enjoy. These features including social activities and outings, art classes, writing workshops, and nutritional dining options, to name just a few amenities.

How Do I Find the Right Assisted Living community?

Deciding on a community for a loved one may take some time. Here are several ideas to help you determine where your family member will be happy.

Conduct Research – It is critical to conduct research and learn as much as possible about communities that you re interested in. Our team at A Place for Mom can guide you in the right direction, and from there, you may choose to read reviews online and locate information about the reputation of the community. Our Senior Living Advisors can help you get started on your research.

Call A Place for Mom to Schedule an In-Person Tour – Touring a community that you re interested in may be extremely valuable in deciding which community is the right one for your loved one. Therefore, consider calling A Place for Mom and let us help you schedule an in-person tour of each community on your list.

Attending the tour with your loved one may be beneficial to see how he or she likes the housing community. When you re on the tour, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the staff professionall and kind? Do they appear to be enjoying their work with the residents? A professionall staff and employees who genuinely care for individuals living at the community is crucial.
  • Do residents look like they are happy and well-cared for? Seeing lots of smiling faces around the community is generally a good sign!
  • How clean is the community? Cleanliness is vital, and this includes the room where your loved one may live, as well as the overall community and the outdoor grounds.
  • Is there a sense of community? While you re touring the area, it may be a good idea to observe how the current residents interact with one another. A strong sense of community is important. Are residents playing cards or spending time talking and laughing together, for example?
  • Do You Like the Location – The location of the community you choose will likely play an important part in your decision. Think about how often you desire to visit your loved one. If you are aiming to visit every day, for instance, opting for the community that is nearest to your home may be the best bet. If you will only be available to visit your family member on the weekends, choosing a location a bit farther away from your house which still suits the needs of you and your loved one could be the right choice.

Don’t be Afraid to Ask Lots of Questions This process is all about finding the best fit for your loved one. Asking the right questions will help ensure that they their needs are being met. One of our Senior Living Advisors can help you compile a list of these questions. It s a good idea to consider and research all options.

What Are the Signs It’s Time for Assisted Living?

It may not be easy to come to the realization that your loved one needs to move to an assisted living community. In order to determine when it may be appropriate to consider assisted living, look for the following signs:

  • Escalating Care Needs – When your loved one needs more care than they, their caregiver, or you can provide, then it may be time to look at assisted living options. Additionally, if your loved one exhibits aggression, or the overall health of your loved one could be jeopardized by leaving them at home alone or without supervision for extended periods of time, then an assisted living community should be prioritized.
  • Wandering – ‘‚¬“Wandering” may often occur when an individual is suffering from dementia or Alzheimer s Disease. This behavior which involves the patient wandering off or outside of the home could be very dangerous for the individual. It only takes a few minutes for an unsupervised individual to wander away. If this behavior occurs, we recommend calling A Place for Mom to discuss your options for assisted living.
  • Sundowning – ‘‚¬“Sundowners Syndrome” (agitated behavior that worsens at the end of the day and is common with Alzheimer s patients) may be a sign that it is time to move your loved one into long-term care.
  • High Levels of Stress for Caregivers – It is important to ask yourself if you (or your loved one s caregiver) are simply too stressed to be able to handle the needs of your family member.

Be honest with yourself and call us when you feel that the situation is too much for you to handle by yourself. We are here to help you with the process of finding an assisted living home for your loved one.

How Do I Make the Right Choice for My Loved One?

Determining where your loved one is going to live may feel like an overwhelming and emotional decision. We understand that what you are going through may be difficult. Fortunately, you re not alone.
