Assisted living communities offer a sense of community as well as individual care. Services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or dementia care. The Kentucky Department for Aging and Independent Living supervises this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include no provisions identified. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, orientation within 90 days of hire, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and adult first-aid. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated to meet the ongoing needs of the resident and functional needs assessment. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 5. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communicating with the resident’s physician and pharmacy for prescriptions, reminding the resident to take medications, and opening the dosage packaging or medication container. Public assistance is available through state Assistance programs for Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
