Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers care, support, and supervision to self-sufficient individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The services provided often include support with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some cases, communities may provide nursing, respite, or hospice. In Iowa, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,933 . Iowa maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Inspections and Appeals, Health communities Division supervises this community type. Staff are required to receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include fire safety, assisted living management or nursing course, accident, and emergency procedures. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a multidisciplinary team must be involved in service planning when residents require personal care or health-related services, negotiated risk agreement, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide hot meals at least once a day, a health care provider must prescribe a therapeutic diet, a licensed dietitian must be available to write and approve the therapeutic menu, and a healthcare provider must review food preparation and service procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident access to a 24-hour personal emergency response system, assistance with personal care, assistance with activities of daily living, and health-related services. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include packaging at the resident’s direction, reading instructions or other label information, and opening containers. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program.
