Assisted living communities offer apartment style housing and social interaction as well as individual support. Assisted living communities usually provide outings for organized activity, assistance with daily activities, and help with appointments and transportation. In certain situations, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or nursing care. In Iowa, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $48,933 . The state of Iowa has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Inspections and Appeals, Health communities Division licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a multidisciplinary team must be involved in service planning when residents require personal care or health-related services, negotiated risk agreement, and a comprehensive mental and physical assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident access to a 24-hour personal emergency response system, health-related services, assistance with activities of daily living, and assistance with personal care. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medications may be administered by community staff, self-administer medications, and packaging at the resident’s direction. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) Elderly Waiver program. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include accident, assisted living management or nursing course, emergency procedures, and fire safety. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include a licensed dietitian must be available to write and approve the therapeutic menu, a healthcare provider must review food preparation and service procedures, communities must provide hot meals at least once a day, and a health care provider must prescribe a therapeutic diet.
