Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social events as well as personalized support. Services provided often involve support with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. In some instances, communities may offer continuing care, hospice, or respite. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. The state of Indiana has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Indiana State Department of Health supervises this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include scheduled transportation for community-based activities, identifying responses to actual or potential health conditions, comprehensive nursing care, and executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a negotiated risk plan will be established, community will identify scope of care based on evaluation, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, and A comprehensive assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include preparation of prescribed medications, Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, and distribution of prescribed medications. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: a review of the community’s policies and procedures, demonstration of equipment, 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years, and including evacuation procedures. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ food allergies, communities must provide three meals a day, communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, and communities must consider residents’ ethnic preferences.
