Overall we are satisfied with the care. The staff comes through at times when we desperately needed help, which has outweighed the minor concerns we did have.

How people pay for assisted living in Fort Wayne

Covering the cost of residing in an assisted living can seem overwhelming at first. However, most residents and their families use a variety of funding types to pay for the cost of assisted living. These may include the following:

  • Private pay methods
  • VA benefits
  • Medicaid
  • Medicare
Private pay methods

Older adults can use private pay options to cover the cost of assisted living. It’s common to use one or more of the following options to pay for assisted living in Fort Wayne.

VA benefits
12358

Number of veterans who live in Fort Wayne

About 22% of Fort Wayne veterans are 75+

If you or your spouse served in the military, you may be eligible for VA benefits and programs, such as the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. These VA benefits can help eligible veterans, veteran spouses, surviving spouses, and others cover some or all of the costs associated with assisted living.

Additionally, eligible veterans can save money through their status. The State of Indiana does not tax military retirement pay at this time, which helps keep more money in the pockets of Hoosier military retirees.[04]

If you are seeking help navigating veterans benefits, you can start by getting in touch with one of the many veterans services organizations (VSOs) in the Fort Wayne area. VSOs in Allen County include the following:

  • The Allen County Veterans Services Office
  • The American Legion
  • Any of Fort Wayne’s three Veterans of Foreign Wars offices

You’ll be able to find volunteers to help you navigate the claims process at many of these locations.

Medicaid

Low-income older adults may be eligible to apply for Indiana Medicaid. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration offers an online application for Indiana Medicaid. Not only does Medicaid cover short-term medical costs, but it can be used for some medically related long-term financial needs, too. Indiana Medicaid does not cover room and board in assisted living.

Indiana Medicaid’s Hoosier Care Connect is a great resource for those who are 65+, blind, or disabled and do not qualify for Medicare. With Hoosier Care Connect, members may receive coverage on prescriptions, doctor’s appointments, and a variety of necessary medical treatments.

Because applying for Medicaid can be a time-consuming and sometimes confusing process, you may want to start by speaking with a Medicaid ombudsman who serves the Fort Wayne area. Ombudsmen are specifically trained to help seniors and their families navigate the Medicaid process. The Aging and In-Home Services Department of Northeast Indiana is also a great resource for Medicaid enrollment assistance for seniors seeking care.

Medicare

Indiana’s Medicare is a federally funded program that acts much like private insurance and will typically cover costs associated with short-term medical treatment. Medicare does not pay for long-term care, such as assisted living room and board.

Medicare can ease other financial burdens, such as lowering the cost of medically necessary care, such as preventive visits, surgeries, nursing care, and rehabilitation.

In addition to lowering your routine medical bills with Medicare, be sure to consider taking advantage of additional programs and support offerings, such as:

If you find yourself or your loved one in need of further Medicare assistance, you may want to make an appointment with a Fort Wayne Medicare ombudsman through the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program of Northeast Indiana or visit your local Social Security office.

Understand Indiana laws and regulations for assisted living facilities

All assisted living facilities that operate in the Fort Wayne area must be licensed and regulated by the Indiana State Department of Health (IDOH). This ensures that they are up to date and maintain all the health and safety standards to protect and serve both residents and staff. Assisted living facilities in Fort Wayne fall under the category of Residential Care Facilities (RCFs).

The Department of Health conducts both pre-licensure and post-licensure surveys. These surveys are designed to ensure that the facility is meeting licensing requirements and has no outstanding violations. If any violations are noted, the facility has the opportunity to make changes within a specific timeframe.

In Indiana, the Department of Health regulates the following in assisted living facilities, among other aspects:[05]

  • Staff-to-patient ratio
  • Staff training requirements
  • Individual resident care plans
  • Contract requirements

Before moving into an assisted living community, you or your loved one should receive a contract that outlines services, financial obligations, referral policies, billing procedures, and other details.

What to expect from assisted living in Fort Wayne

What assisted living is like in Fort Wayne

Choosing the right assisted living facility for you or a loved one is essential, as there are many different types to choose from. There are smaller, more intimate communities as well as larger, bustling communities with care services to meet a wide swath of needs. A Place for Mom partners with several of these top-tier assisted living facilities in Fort Wayne, and our partner facilities have the following types of community formats:

  • Stand-alone assisted living communities with basic care services
  • Combined assisted living and independent living communities with services for a more active lifestyle as well as personal care
  • Combined assisted living, independent living, and memory care facilities for seniors who want to age in place in the event advanced care is ever needed or if partners with different care needs want to live in the same facility

The concept of aging in place has become popular among retirees who want to live life on their terms, including when they need a little extra care managing all the activities of daily living. In Fort Wayne, you’ll find assisted living communities with layouts and amenities designed to make everyone feel at home, with the assurance of care services on-site in the event that needs change. When communities combine several types of senior care on one campus, this enables residents to remain living there for as long as they like, never needing to relocate to find care again. These types of multi-care communities are also great for couples with different care needs.

Activities for socializing and peer support

Assisted living communities typically feature a variety of activities to support socialization and prevent senior isolation. For example, the majority (83%) of our partner communities in Fort Wayne feature exercise programs, such as stretching classes, chair yoga, and more.[02] Additionally, 67% of our assisted living partner communities in the area offer cultural and devotional services that provide important mental stimulation.[02]

If there’s an activity that you (or your family member) love and couldn’t live without, be sure to ask about it when speaking with a representative from an assisted living facility. Just because it’s not noted in the description doesn’t mean the facility doesn’t have it.
