An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers supervision, assistance, and support to independent persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. In Indiana, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 49,200. Indiana has specific rules associated with this type of community. Indiana State Department of Health governs this type of community. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These include: specific position, a review of the community’s policies and procedures, instructions on the needs of the specialized populations served in the community, and first-aid. communities must consider residents’ personal preference meals may temporarily be delivered to the resident’s room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must consider residents’ reasonable religious preferences, communities must meet daily dietary requirements and requests, communities must consider residents’ food allergies, and communities must provide three meals a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Medications may be administered under physician’s order by licensed nursing personnel or qualified medication aides, resident must be observed for effects of medications and undesirable effects must be documented and the resident’s physician notified, and preparation of prescribed medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, community will identify scope of care based on evaluation, evaluation must be updated at least semi-annually or when a significant change in condition occurs, and a negotiated risk plan will be established. Public assistance is available through Medicaid A&D and TBI 1915(c) Waiver program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include executing a minor regimen based upon a nursing diagnosis or as prescribed by a physician, physician’s assistant, chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, podiatrist, or nurse practitioner, comprehensive nursing care, scheduled transportation for community-based activities, and activities and programs appropriate to residents’ abilities and interests.
