An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, support, and aid to self-sufficient persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly provide care supervision, aid with the activities of daily life, and help with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing, continuing care, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, observing the resident, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: internal policies, abuse, infection control, and independence. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include non-medical services, housekeeping, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, A comprehensive assessment, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
