An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, supervision, and aid to medically stable individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. The types of service provided often involve aid with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, hospice, or nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . The state of Illinois maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health certifies this type of community. Staff members receive training in a number of areas. These include: privacy, independence, job responsibilities and limitations, and philosophy and goals. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, medication reminders, security, and medication administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication reminders, medication administration, and reading the medication label to residents. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
