Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides support, aid, and care to independent seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually offer chances for social activity, help with transportation and appointments, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, respite, or skilled nursing care. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health licenses this community type. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, A comprehensive assessment, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, medication reminders, and observing the resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, emergency response systems, non-medical services, and supervision of self-administered medications. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These areas include self-determination, reporting, confidentiality, and independence. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program.
