Assisted living communities offer social opportunities, supervision, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for recreational activity, assistance with daily activities, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, nursing, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes governs this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting with an Epi pen, assisting residents with self-administration, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff members obtain education in a variety of areas. These include: reporting requirements, identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, exploitation of a resident, and provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation.
