Assisted living communities provide a sense of community as well as personalized help. The services offered often involve assistance with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and assisting residents with self-administration. Staff are required to receive training in a number of fields. These areas include emergency preparedness, general infection control principles, proper food preparation, and including the special needs of residents with dementia. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and whether family supports are available. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
