Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer coordinated social events and apartment style housing as well as individual assistance. Assisted living communities often offer care supervision, opportunities for recreational activity, and help with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or Alzheimer’s care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, assisting residents with storage of medications, and cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, described as personal services, and assisted living care. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, proper food preparation, assistance with medications, and Residents’ rights.
