Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide supervision, social events, and personal care to persons around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, nursing care, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and described as personal services. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, emergency preparedness, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, and attendance policies. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, assisting residents with self-administration, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand.
