Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid for people who need help with everyday activities such as mobility or cooking meals. The services offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In certain cases, communities may offer nursing, “aging in place”, or dementia care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation certifies this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, reading the label, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Staff must obtain training in a variety of fields. These include: 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, emergency evacuation, and resident rights. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, assistance with activities of daily living , and personal care services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community .
