Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, assistance, and care to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often involve support with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer skilled nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this type of community. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Staff must obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: providing assistance with activities of daily living, resident behavior and needs, universal precautions, and emergency evacuation. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.
