Assisted living communities provide recreational activities, oversight, and care to people who are about 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing care, or Alzheimer’s care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . Connecticut maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing governs this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, RN conducts consultation with the resident, and plan must include types and frequency of services needed. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , verifying, and opening medication packages. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, medication administration, disease prevention, and assistance with ADLs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These include: aides must pass a competency exam, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, assisted living philosophy, and 10-hour orientation.
