Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers supervision, care, and aid to healthy seniors who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide help with appointments and transportation, outings for leisurely activity, and aid with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division certifies this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must include an appropriate variety of foods, planned in consideration of cultural and religious backgrounds , communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These include: medication policies and procedures, first-aid, knowledge of community services and resources, and the importance and techniques of personal care services and universal precautions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
