Assisted living communities offer social events, oversight, and personal care to persons who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, opportunities for social activity, and help with daily activities. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, dementia care, or respite. In California, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $54,000 . California has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division governs this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications and medication administration. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include first-aid, how to recognize early signs of illness, skills and knowledge required to provide necessary resident care, and housekeeping and sanitation procedures. Public assistance is available through The state’s Medicaid 1915(c) Assisted Living Waiver program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the total daily diet must meet the recommended dietary allowances of the National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, meals must comply with residents’ dietary preference, communities must provide at least three meals per day and snacks, and meals must comply with diet prescribed by physicians.
