Arts, Culture, Entertainment, and Recreation

California’s “Inland Empire,” consisting of Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ontario, has a population of about 4 million and is one of the fastest growing regions in the country. With this growth comes many big-city amenities and options for entertainment and recreation. Riverside, however, is also in close proximity to much of the Southwest’s natural beauty. To the west, Los Angeles is only about an hour’s drive away, and a short distance east of the city one can find Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park. Both are beautiful, sprawling desert parks, with Mojave recognized as the third largest national park in the US. At the opposite extreme of the desert heat lies Big Bear Lake, a mountainous region known for its ski resort and its snowfall which lasts almost half the year. The surrounding area is also a famous golfing destination, with people all over the world flocking to Palm Springs to hit the links. Riverside itself has plenty of fantastic golf courses to choose from as well.

The Riverside region is also home to countless museums of all types, with a large number of historical museums and sites in particular. The Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, located in nearby Palm Springs, details the history of the Indigenous Cahuilla people of the Coachella valley. The Riverside Art Museum, built in 1929 as a YWCA and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, displays an average of 20 exhibitions per year, ranging from traditional to contemporary art. On the outskirts of the city you can find unique attractions such as the California Route 66 Museum, chronicling the development and influence of America’s famous southwestern highway, and the Cabazon Dinosaurs — two massive dinosaur statues built in the 1960s that have been featured in several movies.
