Review ofThe Enclave of Scarborough

We had a nice tour at The Enclave. I thought they were informative. They just didn't have availability at the time, and they seemed to be having staffing issues (although we found that to be the case at most places).

Review ofSchooner Estates Senior Living

My father moved into the Schooner Memory Care facility in October 2020. The staff were very friendly and informative. The facility had opened in May 2020 during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. It was a difficult time due to not being able to visit Dad in person, but the management did everything they could to allow window visits and/or phone visits to help us keep in touch. The programs offered for interactive or exercise activities were fun and gave the residents something to talk about afterwards. My Dad enjoyed the cooking and gained weight after a few months of being there. The Care Manager and the Aides for his neighborhood kept us informed of any health events that happened to him. They truly care about the people that live there. They were responsive to our requests or suggestions for his care to help them learn more about him in order to improve his experience. They maintained a safe and clean environment for all of the residents..

I was very happy with Birchwoods. The staff was wonderful to my loved one. They knew her, and they interacted with her. They were very positive, and she enjoyed her interactions with them. They were just wonderful. Communication was very good. I'd call to check in on what was going on, and they kept me informed as to what was happening. The common areas were clean, and I always saw people going though cleaning. They were always in my loved one's apartment cleaning every day. She wasn't thrilled with the food, but she was used to cooking for herself for so long. But all the food I saw looked good. There were limited activities due to Covid, but I saw that they did what they could when they were able to . The activities directors were very pleasant, and they got to know the residents, even if they couldn't offer all the activities they wanted to do. And the little bit my loved one was able to participate in, she enjoyed.

We chose Bay Square because it did not feel institutional, it had a more homey feel to it. They have all private rooms and it is more than adequate for what he needs. They have been so much like a family to us and treated him so well. The head of nursing is such a loving and caring person, he has gone above and beyond to help us through. He is a real gem. I would absolutely recommend to others looking, it is more expensive but you get what you pay for. They are not all about the money.

Grounds well maintained. Community is quiet and well off US Route 1. COVID protocols in place, masks on visitors. [name removed] answered my questions and concerns. She is very personable. She is an RN and worked in this industry for 30 years. This community is an aging in place community. Independent living, assisted, & Memory care. Pricey, but I have noticed cost are within range of other Southern Maine facilities. My Big concern is running out on money for loved one. Clean. model apartments, private studio and Double Studio set up to view. Many activities for community members. At time of tour, community members setting up for arm chair fitness. 24/7 staff, medication management. Love the quietness of this community in Scarborough. I know my loved one would like it. [name removed] was friendly and well-prepared. She showed me what I wanted to see (a one-bedroom with full kitchen). I have also toured Ashton Gardens and liked its cleanliness and open-air possibilities. These tours are helpful in making me aware of my choices and ask myself about my preferences. For instance, why have a full kitchen when I would have to pay for the food to cook and also pay for three meals a day available in the dining room? I am finding these explorations both enjoyable and valuable.

My mom is very happy here. She loves the food. The community has been very welcoming and friendly. She hasn't had many problems, but they're very responsive. When her garbage disposal wasn't working, somebody came up the next day to fix it. They generally have a bunch of activities but have had to cancel a lot due to Covid, which is outside of their control. They were more affordable than all the other places around, and they do a lovely job. It really is a nice place.

Our experience at HarborChase has been fine so far, but there has been high turnover of staff. They're having a hard time keeping staff, and I know a lot of it has to do with the pandemic. I've noticed differences in the staff the higher up you get. The day-to-day care staff and their direct manager are very good and very helpful. But once you go higher up, they don’t respond well.
