In home care vs nursing home?

My dad suffered a brain injury. He is being moved to a subaccute. If we move him home and exhaust his funds with in home care givers would medicaide pay for a nursing home once the funds are exhausted and we can no longer care for him at home? We are trying to weigh our options.

I would suggest that you speak with an Elder Law Attorney prior to exhausing all of your Dad's funds. There are ways to protect part of your Dad's resources from the Medcaid 'spend down'. One example would be to prepay for funeral expenses. Most states allow for up to $10,000 to be shelted in this way.

Medicaid qualified annuites may or may not offer a partial solution based upon your Dad's asset level. If he owns a home there may be options.

As mentioned, these options vary by state and at times, even county. You should at all means discuss your options with a qualified attorney.
