Mom passed a year ago, I just found out I am the life estate owner

A month before my mom passed my oldest sister told me the house was mine but there was a lien on it from a car accident 15 years ago and if I didn't sell it they would take it .So she gave me a couple thousand dollars to give it to her so she could fix up in case mom got better. Iust now found out I have a life estate, what is my first step? There was no lien by the way

If you signed a deed to your sister it will be difficult to regain the property. A deed that does not limit what is being transferred will transfer all of your interest in the property even if it is only a remainder interest. If you have a life estate that you did not deed to her that means you have the right of possession during your lifetime. You can check the property tax records and see who is listed as owner or check for deeds from you to your sister in the Probate Office. It appears that she lied to you and took the property. I hope not. If you get the deeds schedule an appointment with a local attorney. He/she will be able to tell you what you own and what rights you have.
