How do I know my Dad is in a safe dementia care facility?

A place for dad? He is in NV and not sure of his current home This is all new to me and I am across the country. How can one be sure that it is a safe/clean/licensed facility? He has dementia and the place mom has sent him to does not accept his VA benefits nor Medicare. She has signed over his social security is this normal?

I would utilize the information as posted by Angel to check into the facility that you father is in currently or even request information from the facility itself regarding licensure and inspection reports.

What type of VA Benefits is your father receiving? If he is just enrolled in VA Healthcare there would be no coverage for the assisted living facility. Should he be receiving VA compensation via either Service Connected Disability or VA Non-Service Connected Pension; I do not understand why they would not accept that as it is income paid to your father. Medicare will not pay for any long term assisted living, if she has signed over his Social Security it sounds like it could either be an arrangement with the facility itself or could be a Medicaid situation to provide for his medical care.

Hello -

A Place for Mom has a State by State Guide to Assisted Living Records that you may find useful. The guide tells you how to find assisted living records such as licensing and background information on assisted living communities. If your dad is in a skilled nursing facility you may wish to check out Medicare’s Nursing Home Compare website.
