Ask a Question

Can parents be claimed as dependents on the FAFSA?

My parents live with me and I pay most of their expenses, I was able to claim them as dependents on income taxes but I don't know if the FAFSA is different.

Dependents include:
"the number of people who are not your parents' children but who live with your parents and receive more than half of their support from your parents, and will continue to receive more than half of their support from your parents during the school year. Support includes money, housing, food, clothes, medical and dental care, gifts, loans, payment of college costs, etc."

You have to be providing 50% or more of their support, and must take into account any income of theirs as it will be deemed to be supporting them as well, even if it isn't being used that way.
