How do I convince someone to use a walker?

I have an 89 year old friend with balance and walking problems. She uses a walker at home but in public she only wants to use a cane and hold onto the person helping her. This can throw the helping person off balance and they could hurt themselves if they try to catch her if she falls. How do I convince her to use a walker in public for her safety and others safety?

Are you going places with her? I would be honest and frank about YOUR OWN safety and just take the walker along with you! It might also be important if she has other caregivers, family, etc nearby that you communicate with them so her message is the same.

I agree with what Sarah said. You have to be careful of your own safety.
I got my husband to use a walker by asking him to carry stuff for me in the basket. Maybe that might work with your friend. Next time you go out with her bring a book or something else that will not fit in your purse and ask if she can take the walker so you can put your book in it.
