Ask a Question

How do I know if a facility has violations or other problems?

You always hear about places that are all peaches and cream on the surface and then turn out to be abusive to residents. How do I do a deeper check? I don't trust what the management will tell me and I'm not totally sure I'd get any negative insight from other residents.

If the facility is a nursing home, you can go to and look up the facility. Not only will you see Medicare's rating, but you can drill down and read the last inspection report.

Medicaire operates a service that can be used to evaluate licensed nursing homes based on a number of reportable criteria.
It is not a perfect tool, but a good start. Additionally, visit the home and speak with residents, staff, kitchen, etc.

You are always welcome to review a copy of their most recent survey report, those are public knowledge and families can ask for those at any time. I encourage families to review it directly with the administration if you have any questions as sometimes their wording and other lingo is difficult to understand if you are not in the industry of senior living.

Some states provide the information on line while others have yet to jump on that bandwagon.
