What does assisted living rent include?

Is it just room, meals, housekeeping? What about phone and cable? What about medical or caregiving stuff? How do I make sure they don't keep adding little charges until I'm paying a lot more than I originally agreed to?

This probably depends on the particular facility. Usually telephone service is not included as the facility does not want to get saddled with a lot of long distance phone call charges. It also depends to some extent on the state you live in, as each state regulates licensed areas. My experience with one Assisted Living place was that if medication monitoring was needed, an extra charge was added. In another facility that is included. Both places included help with bathing and dressing in the basic charge. The rent also includes an activity program and usually some sort of snacks. Check with the facility you are interested in; they should be able to provide you with a list of included amenities.
