How early should I start searching for assisted living options?

2 years, 6 months? I don't want to worry my parents by looking too early but I don't want to have to scramble either.

You are wise to be proactive in researching senior living options - you will make a better decision from a position of choice rather than crisis. I would recommend beginning your search 6 - 12 months prior to the projected transition timeline. This will give you time to research, gather recommendations, visit a variety of communities and compare key features and pricing. A proactive search will give you the opportunity to visit formally such as a tour and informally such as attending an event where you can visit with residents and families. Involving your parents in the decision process will make the transition smoother with less anxiety on everyone’e part!
