How can I help my parents stay safe on a road trip?

They are both healthy in both mind & body but are in their mid-80's. They both drive just fine and have made this trip several times over the last 20 years.

You didn’t mention the distance of this trip. It is good if both parents can drive to spell each other and keep an eye on each other to make sure they are driving safely.

Doctors will recommend that as we age, we need to make more frequent stops to get out of the car and walk around to prevent blood clots and stay alert and refreshed,

If they are traveling a long distance, you might want to make doubly sure that they don’t become too fatigued on the trip.

One option that you might consider is a portable Emergency Alert device. These have really advanced over the years, and are now about the size of a book of matches. They are generally based on popular cell networks, offer features like GPS location tracking, fall monitoring, as well as manually activated assistance requests. The beauty of these devices is that when activated, they send the GPS coordinates of it's current location. The downside is that if they travel to an area where there is no cell coverage, the device is useless. You could offer it to your parents as a type of insurance: If you need help of any sort, it's as easy as pressing a button. If there aren't any problems, it's comforting to know there is an option they can use.
