These decisions depend upon several factors. Some of these factors include individual preferences and resources, the mental and physical condition of the individual and community resources.

A skilled nursing facility (nursing home) may be appropriate when the individual requires specialized care, such as wound care or physical therapy or protective care for one with dementia.

Another reason for considering making a change from home to a nursing facility would be if the caregiver is becoming overwhelmed.

There are other options besides a nursing home. Home Health Agencies can provide skilled nursing and therapy in the home. If the individual mainly needs assistance with activities of daily living, this can be provided in the home, an assisted living facility or a board and care home.

I have found through personal experience that this is a great question to ask an individual's primary care physician. Often the doctor will be the one who suggests nursing home care.
