How dangerous are antipsychotic medications for dementia patients?

Mom's doctor wants to put her on antipsychotic medication but the TV commercials say it can cause death in dementia patients. Should I be worried or is this a really rare possibility?

When watching the TV medication ads, I often wonder if people are being scared out of taking their medications. Advertisers are required to list all side effects and adverse reactions of the drug, no matter how common they may be. It can be very intimidating.

All medications can have side effects and/or adverse reactions. That is why they should only be taken under close supervision of a primary care provider. I suggest that you share your concerns with your Mom’s doctor. If you are not satisfied, then get a second opinion. Another good resource is the Alzheimer’s Association. There has been a great deal of progress made in recent years, in the treatment of dementia, through the use of medications.
