Can alcoholics with dementia forget their addiction?

Good question, and I am not a doctor. However, my opinion is that an addiction is not entirely mental, it is physical. I assume that he will still have his craving, just like smoking.

While their mind may forget the addition their body still has the cravings. Folks with dementia are often easily re-directed. Maybe trying a favorite snack, providing ample stock thereof, etc will help you through this phase.

While some dementia is alcohol-abuse induced, other forms of dementia do occur yet there is still the underlying alcoholism symptoms.
