Should I ask my Mom to stop giving stuff to my kids?

Mom keeps giving her stuff away to my children saying that she is not going to around much longer. Needless to say this is upsetting my kids. Should I ask my mom to stop or explain to my kids that grandma is sick and she wants to make sure they have things that hold meaning for her and to remember her by?

While I don’t know the circumstances regarding your mom’s age, the status of her health, or your children’s ages, it can be very important to someone to make sure that their personal property is properly distributed to specific family members. I might ask your mom why she wants to give her things away now? This distribution can take place at any time, but may become a priority when facing a health crisis or end of life.

Help your mom assemble her wishes for distributing her personal property and communicate, if she chooses, her reasons for giving certain items to her loved ones. At times, it gives great pleasure for someone faced with health issues the opportunity to give things away while they are still living.

I think your explanation to your children is perfect! My grandmother did the same thing, and it brought her great joy to see that her precious things were going to be loved.
