Can a senior be a tax dependent?

Can I deduct my dad as a dependent on my taxes if I am his primary caregiver?

Yes, it is possible. Your father must meet IRS guidelines as a “qualifying relative” dependent, including citizenship requirements, income restrictions, and others—see your tax advisor for full details. The most important requirement is that you must have provided more than half of your father’s total support during the year. Again, your tax advisor can help you with the details.

My husband was able to deduct his dad as a dependent but there were specific IRS regulations that I don't remember. I'd check the IRS website or give them a call.
