Highly recommend
Cedarhurst of Columbia have been wonderful. They blend into my husband's life and he thinks he's working for CedarHurst. They prepare good good and provided good care to the residents. Thanks. However there were some new items left at the front desk on the 2nd day there that were to be given to our loved one and they totally disappeared.

A great facility for memory care
The main reason we chose Cedarhurst of Columbia over others we visited was just because of the way they treated the residents with such care and dignity. Our dad is on the memory care floor. Our dad is getting such good care at Cedarhurst, we get pictures and reports on him. They encourage him to join in the activities. I would very much so recommend this community to anybody who is looking.

Over promised, under delivered.
This is pretty clean place. However, falls dramatically short on the apartment cleaning. We were there 2 months and only had it cleaned by housekeeping once even though it was supposed to be weekly. The aids do wash the laundry & sheets but if you want laundry detergent & softener used the resident must provide it. The aids also empty the trash cans and make the bed regularly. Common areas are clean and tidy. Most of the staff we really friendly, however 2 were not friendly at all. That's why I ranked a 4. Severely understaffed. Call lights go unanswered for hours sometimes. They don't keep accurate medical records when passing patient meds therefore no one really knows what is going on. There are some really good med techs. However, one left pills in the mouth of the resident who couldn't swallow and was unconscious. Good food options but if you want seasoning you need to bring your salt. Amazing activity options for the residents. Place needs more staff, more training and better management. Would only go there if there were no other options. That it is a decent place for highly mobile and independent people that can do most things with no help.

Friendly staff and fun activities
What we really like about Cedarhurst of Columbia is how much the staff pay attention to our loved one as an individual and delight in who he is. [name removed] plans activities that he enjoys - there is a baking club, exercises with 60s music, they play noodle ball and have coffee and conversation's just to name a few.

Do A Trial Before Comitting
I wouldn't recommend the community to others for their loved ones. I was never given a chance to use the new staff, as all the prior staff was let go. The entire memory care wing was not cared for by the prior staff. My loved one fell multiple times with no assistance with the prior staff. The staff wouldn't encourage the residents to eat in the dining room. The Executive Director tried to make amends; however, it was too late for my loved one and family. My loved one never wanted to go back because of their poor experience here.

Would Recommend
This was just a 2-week stay last year. My husband, for the most part, enjoyed himself. The facility is beautiful and clean, the staff and residents were very friendly, the food was okay if a bit skimpy. There were activities scheduled on their calendar, but usually, nobody showed. During his stay, they were short-handed, so he could have used more showers. Occasionally, he will say he misses the people and would go back.

All of the staff here are extremely friendly. The executive staff takes time about a month after move in to sit down with the family and go over everything and make sure everyone is on the same page with the care. One frustration I have had is we have been unable to get some important doctors appointments set up for my loved on - but that is no fault of theirs. I would absolutely recommend Cedarhurst of Columbia to others looking.

Pleasant and comforting, but not inspiring
When you talk to them they speak well and they're kind of like a Johnny-on-the-spot when talking to you, but I'm unsure if it always gets down to their floor staff. The floor staff are all very friendly, mostly no one ever gives you a hard time. It's hard to say much bad about them, but they're kind of bland and the reality may be that "bland" is the best you can get when it comes to Alzheimer's - unless we adapt a widely new approach to this disease. The meals appear to be timely and properly cooked, but not very inspired. In the memory care unit, as I think is true of most places within the U.S., none of these places have a clue what's the best approach for a diet when you have Alzheimer's disease. The meal selection is kind of medium-fair. I know they have activities, but I'm unsure how much of those activities include memory care. Memory care consists of having a locked door, and that's the primary activity or mechanism they use. They'll lock the door because if not, they will wander. The doors are alarmed and you can go out for an emergency, but they will sound an active alarm. Every once in a while the alarm flares up and it just keeps going, as the evening staff kind of get around to it when they get around to it. I don't think they're much worried about the residents leaving or getting far because of their limited mobility. They're not Johnny-on-the spot to respond to the door alarm. They're not bad, just not very impressive. In this town, when you want to staff something like this place, you wont get the crème of the crop who's applying for the job. They are very friendly and try to do reasonably well, there will still be a little of an uphill battle. I'm always there when I'm not out of town or in the hospital sick, but I'm there every almost single day. I mostly visit during the evening as I don't want to break up my time by coming during the day. I'm not sure how actively she participates. She gets kind of contrary, so things I've talked about that I'd like her to do, she won't do them and they won't fight her too much. The last time they tried to get her engaged she slapped someone and cursed a little, which is so unlike her. I don't know how much is fair to say; I get the impression that their activities aren't much different and may be a little less frequent than her previous community. It doesn't compare to the activities her grandmother received in nursing home, but she wasn't in a memory care unit. There are a lot of constraints over what they can do and there are also constraints over what I can say. I'll need to talk to their administrative staff because she's been prescribed a medication and there is no indication, to my knowledge, that she needs to be on that medication - as she does not have any of the conditions that are related to the use of that medication. It's an okay place and it's very attractive looking. It looks quite proper and it has a wing for memory care; the rest of the rather large building is assisted living and they can come and go as they please. They have some control over the doors after a certain time of night. If you come by late, you have to pick up a phone to be let in and they are pretty good with that. It's not a place you can say much negative about. It's kind of bland, but it's closer than the other place and probably better because it's condition and cleanliness is better than her previous community. It's posh-looking; they keep it clean and it's only about five to six years old. The carpeting was beginning to reflect the time and now they're working on replacing it. There are no major negatives. They hand their cards out readily and they answer the phone when they are there. So it's okay, but it's just not the kind of place that fires you up. They try very hard to be friendly and helpful for me, but there aren't any good answers to Alzheimer's, especially in America.

Tour experience
In the beginning of the tour, I was very impressed by everything that I saw. That was until we got to the memory care unit. The residents in the memory care unit were all together in a room and there was no staff member in sight. The lady giving us the tour looked mortified herself and actually had to stop our tour to go tend to the residents who were needing help. That made our decision right there.

Come One, Come All to Cedarhurst
It's been good overall. Nothing to complain about. The food is good. People are friendly. It's been clean overall except a couple of spots on the rug. They keep it painted and in good maintenance order. If you need help with maintenance, they send somebody up to help. They have an activities director that's full of energy and always has something going 5-6 days a week. They go fishing and on field trips to the mall. They have all sorts of games, live music a couple times a month, and a fun variety of activities. Today we're going bowling. Overall I'd recommend it here.

We chose Cedarhurst of Columbia because the first person I spoke to was so helpful and it made me feel more comfortable in placing my mom here. The room sizes here are very large and spacious. The only complaint I have had is that things are not quite as good on weekends, it seems like they may be a little short staffed. But Mondays through Friday things are great. I would recommend to others looking.

Facility not capable of providing sufficient attention for memory care patients
My loved one was previously in a memory care assisted living facility that couldn't provide the care she needed. Cedarhurst was adamant they could take care of my loved one, that it wouldn't be a problem. They observed her via Facetime while she was in the hospital and based on that observation told me it wouldn't be an issue. I feel like I was sold down the river. It was fine at first, but then she had multiple falls and repeatedly ended up in the emergency room. The doctors were concerned about the extent of how "black and blue" she was. When I called Cedarhurst to say we wouldn't be back, they were just like "Okay, see you later." When my loved one was falling, there was no talk of a care plan to prevent further falls. They simply called to notify me, and that was it. I was hopeful - it was a beautiful facility. But I felt like the social worker was a salesman, not a social worker. Part of their sales pitch was a 60-day money back guarantee. My loved one was there less than that amount of time, and I couldn't get any response at all after contacting them to get my money back.

Caring Community
They do seem to be very caring. They're good at what they do. Our biggest problem was communication - we couldn't get ahold of them. Part of that was due to Covid. They were understaffed with all the extra responsibilities during this time. They did very good at getting our loved one interested in coloring by number, which surprised me. That kept him occupied, and he enjoyed it. Overall I would recommend Cedarhurst, it was very nice.

A Place for Mom has scored Cedarhurst of Columbia 8.9 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score.
