It was just a blessing
We have not been able to visit the community yet due to the restrictions, however they just recently opened back up so we will get to go visit over Easter weekend. Our loved one is very happy at the Glen Carr House, she is just thriving. She is in the memory care area but she is much more alert then at her previous community. They have a lot of activities to do, she was actually participating in dominoes when we last spoke with her which was amazing to hear.

Medication sedation
We pulled mom out of Glen Carr after 6 months because they used Depakote to treat her restlessness and agitation in dementia. We were shocked to see her change from a generally happy (though restless) woman into a fearful, sedated shell of what she was when admitted 6 months before.
Reading "Depakote and Treatment of Agitation in Alzheimer's" by Esther Heerema, MSW, updated January 29, 2020, I learned many facts consistent with our experience.
According to multiple research studies, Depakote was no more effective than a placebo in decreasing the challenging behaviors of dementia. These studies also found participants were at a high risk for side effects, including decreased blood platelets, increased agitation, gait disturbances, tremor, sedation and sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
Depakote has advantage of flying lower under the radar in nursing home regulations, which are highly concentrated on reduction/ elimination of antipsychotic medications. Can't recommend GC.

Meeting Mothers needs
My mother was at Glen Carr for over a year before she passed. At first I thought she need more attention than what she was getting but by going there on a daily basis I saw that my mother had her own mind and did her own thing which sometimes was in conflict to her own best interest. When I was away from her I realized that Glen Carr personnel did their best to make her comfortable, safe and happy. Glen Carr has great people working for them and as any place of business they have some people that do not do their job. Most of my concerns were addressed by Glen Carr management and they always returned calls and was always willing to hear my concerns. My mother had dementia which is a terrible disease and very hard to communicate with people that have this condition but Glen Carr did a good job of listening and addressing all my mothers needs. I want to thank the Glen Carr workers and management for helping us make my mothers last year and days comfortable and not letting her feel alone.

Upset Wife
My grandmother and I went to have a visit with my grandfather . We were not allowed inside which is fine. We had to wear our masks outside and stay 6 feet apart. When we signed in, looking in the window the staff wasn’t wearing theirs and was definitely not 6 feet apart. I realize they can’t really take care of our loved ones and stay 6 feet apart but I would like to see the staff wearing masks especially if they are within inches from our loved ones.

If you want your loved one in a facility where the Administrator instructs her staff to tell family members shes in a meeting if they walk in... put your loved ones here. She will smile in your face and take your money. They don't care about your loved ones. They come in there giggling and dressed like thier going to a cocktail party. Stay away from this place for your own good.

This facility overworks thier staff. The CNAs cook breakfast which is cross contamination. There are a number of things that need to be fixed. Houses are cleaned once a week. This place needs a serious intervention.

They really do a very good job.
They are very clean and very friendly. They offer activities for those that want to be engaged. We aren't super happy with the food, he rarely gets a meal he likes. The quality of the food isn't very good, and they have a weekly menu and it's always the same. I can't really think of anything other than the food, that could be improved. They really do a very good job.

Overall our we've had a very good experience here, and we're glad we found the place. They have multiple houses and we chose to move our loved one into their newest house, which had just opened. One aspect we hadn't considered was that since this was a new house it would also be employees who hadn't worked together before. It was a little rocky and inconsistent to start, but things have settled down now, after a few weeks. Things have been so much easier now that her care is handled by the visiting nurse practitioner, and now that they are taking care of her medication needs. It's a very nice little community, and the staff have all been great.

All in all pretty good.
The immediate staff I would give a five and the administrative staff I would give a four. The caregivers are very responsive, the administrative staff takes a while to return calls. Communication with the administration could be better. I would give the food about a four. When they say they have a flat rate and they don't have different levels of care, they do.... there is a steep price, step up for certain care needs.
