Along with all the celebrations, A Place for Mom would like to remind families to keep their elderly loved ones hydrated as America is currently experiencing record heat waves across the country. According to NPR, 45 of the 50states currently have temperatures in the 90s, and many states are experiencing triple digits. So along with the refreshing strawberry lemonade, make sure to bring out the protective hats, umbrellas, sun block and water to help protect our elders. 2012 Worst Year on Record for Nursing Home Violations

The truth about nursing homes is sobering. Though we assume that seniors in nursing homes or assisted living facilities receive a basic level of comfort and safety, the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) reports that in 2012 nearly 1 in 3 nursing homes were cited for violating federal standards over a two-year period, and over half of nursing home staff members admitted to mistreating senior residents over the prior year.
