ALFA announces the much-anticipated list of largest assisted living and independent living communities in their April/May issue of Senior Living Executive. Industry trends, acquisitions, and REITs (real estate investment trusts) all contributed to the provider movement, as discussed in this exclusive online and print edition.

senior housing developmentThe annual announcement of the largest assisted living and independent living providers has arrived! The Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) disclosed the largest providers in terms of unit counts in their magazine, Senior Living Executive. The following providers were deemed to have the most units:

  1. Brookdale Senior Living
  2. Emeritus Senior Living
  3. Holiday Retirement
  4. Sunrise Senior Living
  5. Life Care Services, LLC

On the assisted living side, Emeritus Senior Living, Sunrise Senior Living, Brookdale Senior Living, Five Star Senior Living and Atria Senior Living earned the spots. And on the independent living side, Holiday Retirement, Brookdale, Erickson Living Management, Life Care Services LLC and Five Star were determined the largest providers.

REITS and recovery was the theme of this year’s list. New construction of communities remained low, but investors saw REITS as the safe acquisition sector of senior living, so “absorption increased and the acquisitions market exploded,” according to ALFA. This market trend allowed for significant movement and consolidation among both large and midsize operators. And the memory care sector experienced growth and influenced acquisition and provider movement. According to ALFA, “Several companies inch up the annual list, thanks to game-changing REIT deals and smart expansion moves.”

Dan Willis, Senior Vice President of Partner Services at A Place for Mom, comments on the announcement: “A Place for Mom is pleased to work with such an overwhelming majority of these large providers of senior living services. They provide good products and services to their chosen market niches, and we are pleased to be able to help families find the best fits for their particular circumstances and situations.”
