It’s important to note that assisted living often costs more than other senior housing options. For example, Independent living communities don’t offer the same level of care, so the monthly rent tends to be less. This holds true in Venice, Florida.
According to A Place for Mom’s proprietary data, you can expect to pay an average of $4,483 a month at an assisted living facility.[02] This figure includes the cost of rent as well as service and add-on fees to give you a picture of the total cost seniors paid at our partner assisted living communities in the Venice area.
The following figures represent the average baseline costs for Venice and don’t include additional fees for ancillary services.

Paying for assisted living depends largely on you or your loved one’s circumstances. Many seniors foot the entire bill through private resources; others use a combination of savings and insurance benefits. To help you understand your options, we’ve provided details on a range of payment methods below, including personal funds, VA benefits, Medicaid, and Medicare.
You or your loved one will likely use private resources to cover at least a portion of the costs associated with assisted living in Venice. This might include Social Security benefits, retirement savings, pensions, retirement account distributions, investment-generated income, and any one or more of the following:
Number of veterans who live in Venice
About 58% of Venice veterans are over the age of 75
If your loved one is a veteran, there are several programs through the VA that they can use to help offset the costs of assisted living in the Venice area. The most common ones will be the VA Pension and the Aid & Attendance benefit. The VA Pension is available to honorably discharged veterans who meet certain requirements, and it can be put toward housing expenses. The Aid & Attendance benefit is paid in addition to the VA Pension and is available to wartime veterans who need daily support. You can get an application for Aid & Attendance online or at a regional VA office.
Your loved one may also qualify for the VA Disability Compensation, which is another tax-free benefit for veterans who require assistance. Your loved one must have a service-connected disability or an existing condition made worse by military service to be eligible. There is a full benefits list available on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.
Although not a traditional VA benefit, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has established the Unmet Needs program for veterans facing financial hardships. This program awards up to $1,500 to qualifying veterans, and the funds can be put toward basic life needs.
If you run into any difficulties during the application process or have questions about eligibility requirements, a veterans services organization (VSO) can help. In Venice, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans can help you get in touch with a veterans services officer. As can the Sarasota County Veterans Services office. Veterans services officers can answer your questions about VA benefits and help you navigate the entire claims process.

Statewide Medicaid Managed Care (SMMC), Florida’s Medicaid program, may be of assistance in paying for an assisted living community. It covers care-related services administered by a registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, or qualified home health aid. While room and board is considered a personal expense, Medicaid can be used to cover some health care services at an assisted living facility.
The Long-Term Care Waiver can be used on attendant care, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and medication administration, among a host of other care-related services. It’s just one waiver that’s offered through the home and community based services waiver program.
Should you have any questions about coverage or how to apply, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and the Area Agency on Aging offer a Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHIP) program. The Florida Ombudsman Program can also assist with long-term care advocacy support.

Anyone at or over the age of 65 or diagnosed with specific illnesses or disabilities can sign up for Medicare. Medicare does not cover the custodial costs associated with assisted living, such as room and board, but it can offset certain medically necessary in-home care expenses. This might include part-time home health aide services, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and occasional skilled nursing. It can also be used for inpatient hospital stays, short-term acute care, and prescription medications.
In addition to the coverage itself, Venice offers the Florida Medicare Savings Program, which can help eligible individuals cover some of the costs associated with Part A and Part B premiums and copayments. The Florida Discount Drug Card Program helps lower the cost of prescription medications. Both of these can help you find extra room in your budget to pay for assisted living.
If you or your loved one has questions about Medicare, you can reach out to the Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders (SHINE) program for free counseling and application help.
You can also ask for help or apply in person at the local Social Security Administration. You can also contact the Florida Ombudsman Program for long-term care advocacy support.

Like many states, Florida requires assisted living communities to obtain licenses prior to operation. Many of these communities will obtain what’s known as a standard license through the Bureau of Health Facility Regulation when they only offer routine personal care services.[05] Further licensing is available should the community offer additional services, such as limited nursing services (LNS), extended congregate care (ECC), or limited mental health services (LMH).
Each license comes with additional regulations in regard to staffing and training. An LNS license, for example, would require a nursing professional to administer certain care services within the community. The same would be true for an ECC license; however, direct care employees must also receive training on the care of people with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia-related diagnoses to care for those in a memory care unit. Any additional requirements would be in addition to the core training and competency test required of anyone working at a Florida-based assisted living community.
Once licensed, assisted living communities are subject to regular inspections. These inspections will assess the state of the property and whether the community is providing the appropriate services associated with its level of licensing. If you’re interested in reviewing past inspection reports, visit the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration website.

Florida has no specific COVID-19 mandates for assisted living facilities aside from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. However, individual communities may have additional regulations in place to protect residents. Check with the facility in question for further information.
Vaccinations. Getting vaccinated is encouraged but not required.
Masking. People may choose to wear a mask, and it is suggested in crowded public areas.
Facility cleanliness. Facilities should regularly clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces.
Staff safety. Communities should improve ventilation to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
Venice is a picturesque retirement city. Residents love the area’s stunning swimming beaches, subtropical climate, and beautiful architecture. Your loved one will enjoy staying in an assisted living community with a tropical color palette and plenty of natural beauty. These communities allow seniors to live comfortably while providing a little extra assistance with daily activities, such as bathing or dressing. If your loved one has mobility issues, for example, this type of senior living arrangement would be a good fit. And while some communities offer just the basics (i.e., room, board, and personal care), others make residents feel as though they’ve moved to a luxury resort.
Moving to an assisted living community doesn’t mean your loved one will be confined to a room. Rather, seniors have access to a range of common areas. We’re not just talking about a dining room — though many offer restaurant-style dining with low- and no-sodium meal options. Your loved one may be interested in a community with an on-site arts and craft center if they’re up for a new hobby. More of a bookworm? Perhaps a community with an on-site library is more their speed. What’s more, most of the communities in our partner network are pet-friendly, so your loved one can bring a dog or cat during the move.
One of the things you should know about assisted living communities in the Venice area is that most have an activity director on staff. Your loved one can expect their social calendar to be full of happy hours, barbecues, picnics, holiday parties, and, of course, a live musical performance or two. Additionally, many of the communities in our partner network offer on-site fitness opportunities, such as stretching classes, yoga, chair yoga, and more. Your loved one may also get a chance to get to know the city better with occasional day trips and outings to concerts, museums, and more.
While there are a couple of communities that offer assisted living exclusively, most make it easy to age in place with a combination of senior living options, such as independent living and memory care. They also provide additional care-related services outside of personal care. Here’s a breakdown of the communities we partner with in the Venice area:

Sarasota Memorial Hospital is a full-service, acute care medical center that’s nationally ranked in two adult specialties and regionally ranked as the sixth-best hospital in Florida. It excels in the areas of heart attack, heart failure, aortic valve surgery, kidney failure, stroke, gastroenterology, hip replacement, and knee replacement.
HCA Florida Sarasota Doctors Hospital is a general and surgical medical center. It has been awarded a five-star rating from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and it’s considered high-performing in heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, hip replacement, and knee replacement.
Three-time winner of “best hospital” by a local publication, Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is an acute care hospital that provides a range of services, such as cancer care, diabetes care, and orthopedics.
One of the services offered at the majority of assisted living communities we partner with in the Venice area is provided transportation. In fact, 93% of the communities in our partner network provide residents with complimentary transportation services.[02] Your loved one will also have at-cost transportation options in 40% of communities.
If friends or family visit, you or your loved one can also take public transit. The Sarasota County Area Transportation (SCAT) operates bus lines in Venice, where seniors and Medicare cardholders can take advantage of discounted fares. (Anyone 80 or older rides for free.) However, the only drawback with this option is that Venice is only ranked 12 out of 100 by Walk Score for its transit services, meaning the bus lines in Venice are limited.[08]
If your loved one requires transportation outside of what’s provided by the assisted living community, look into SCATPlus, which is a curb-to-curb rideshare service for individuals unable to use fixed routes.
Luckily, Venice is walkable, with a walk score of 31. If your loved one lives in the neighborhoods of Venice, Venice Edgewood, and East Gate, it’s a bit easier to get around on foot. Walk Score rates cities for the ease of getting around on a scale of 0 to 100.
Getting involved and staying connected isn’t a problem for seniors living in the Venice area. The majority of our partner assisted living communities offer plenty of on-site activities for residents, such as cooking classes or yoga. There are also regular outings and day trips for seniors who prefer to get out on the town.
If you or your loved one has a free afternoon with friends or family, then take a trip to the Venice Farmers’ Market. Every Sunday, you’ll find booths selling bread, seafood, arts, and gifts, among other things. You can make a full day of the market by grabbing lunch at one of the food vendors and enjoying some live music played by one of the area’s many musicians.
Looking to get active? Centennial Park offers plenty of walking paths flanked by beautiful landscaping. Plus, the park is pet-friendly. Just don’t forget to bring your dog’s leash. And if you schedule it right, you may get a chance to hear some live music at the gazebo.
If you or your loved one is looking for something more relaxing, then maybe Caspersen Beach would be a better option. In addition to its gorgeous beachfront, you can hit up the nature trail that takes you through dunes, marshes, mangroves, and tidal flats. The Venice Fishing Pier and Venice Area Audubon Society are also great places to enjoy the outdoors and get in some fishing or birdwatching.
Would you prefer a more educational outing? The Ideal Classic Cars and Showroom is part museum, part dealership. There’s also the Venice Museum and Archives. It features more than 30,000 photographs, archives, and other objects related to Venice’s history.
If you’re looking for an appealing alternative to Venice, consider the city of Sarasota. Go on a sun-soaked experience with your loved one at Lido Beach and Siesta Key Beach. Afterward, head indoors for a cultural adventure by visiting the renowned Ringling of circus fame, where you can explore its grand estate, museums, gardens, and an array of captivating attractions.
The Windsor of Bradenton, Bayshore Guest Home and Gardens and Brookdale Punta Gorda Isles are the top-rated Assisted Living facilities near Venice, FL. These Assisted Living facilities received the highest rankings based on verified family reviews. See full list of communities.
